“The Investigator Child”: Profile Line 1

The way we play our role in life, according to the Human Design system, is referred to as Profile. This post offers tips for parents on what to expect if your child’s Profile shows a 1 in it, plus how to help them thrive.

If your child is born with a Line 1 in their Profile, they’re probably the Private Investigator of your family.

People who carry this trait love to research, fact-find, investigate and info-gather.

They are driven to do this so that they can build a safe and secure foundation in life. Line 1 kids secure their place in the world through what they know.

Below are some common behaviors and characteristics of kids who carry the Line 1 in their Human Design Profile. They:

  • read books that go deep into a topic and feed their curiosity,
  • ask “Why?” (about everything!), and follow it up with, “But how?!”
  • often feel like they don’t know enough,
  • like to learn the basics of a topic before they dare to take part in it
  • show hesitation if they don’t fully understand what they’re getting into beforehand,
  • often convinced that they need extra schooling to prove they can do an activity or speak confidently about something,
  • tend to recite minute details or keep adding unimportant ones (to homework assignments, etc.) to prove how much they DO know,
  • and typically enjoy activities that bring them more information, like watching history documentaries, reading product reviews, watching movie trailers, or grilling adults!

Here’s why:

Line 1 kids are here to build a secure foundation in life. They’re hardwired to do that by gaining knowledge.

If they don’t have enough information, they won’t feel secure.

They need that wide breadth of data, statistics, insights, factoids and education so that they feel safe.

When a Line 1 kiddo doesn’t have enough info?

They feel worried, insecure, unsafe, and like they’re “not enough.”

And sometimes, if, for example, they’re called on in class to share what they’ve learned? They might even feel like a fraud.

Talk about Imposter Syndrome.

And what a shame, too.

The irony is, because they spend so much time going to the depths to discover every detail of a topic, Line 1 kids typically)know much more than their classmates.

The Line 1 child will do everything possible to make certain they know what they’re talking about before taking action.

That’s why we call them Investigators.

These are research-thirsty little people who are gathering up the necessary bits of knowledge the rest of us can build off of.

Line 1 kids have a bright future ahead of them if they’re supported in cultivating this gift of Investigation.

Parents can help their Line 1 kids to build confidence and thrive by:

  1. Acknowledging and honoring their thirst for knowledge
  2. Refraining from “throwing them into the deep end” without warning
  3. Giving them plenty of information ahead of time about what to expect if they’re going to a new school, trying a new sport, or attending a new camp — remember, these kids want the details; providing them is the only way they’re going to feel secure
  4. Helping them to keep the big picture in mind so that they don’t “lose the forest for the trees”
  5. Nurturing their interests by asking what they’d like to learn more about
  6. Providing access to information (get them their own library card!!)
  7. Asking them to share details when you or another family member don’t know something –they probably know it! or you can pretend that you don’t;)

Your little Private Eye has a bright future ahead of them if you can help them to cultivate their unique knack for research.

This trait makes today’s kids with a Profile Line 1 tomorrow’s great researchers, analysts, authors, teachers and Subject Matter Experts (SME’s).
