How Gates, Lines & Planetary Transits Interplay and Affect Us

Learn the fundamental definitions for Gates, Lines, and Transits, plus their basic functions and how to begin interpreting them to support you through you Human Design discovery journey.

Gates: The Basics

A Gate is an overarching energetic theme or trait that we humans all get to experience at one point or another.

There are 64 Gates total, and each one can be considered as a useful tool in our toolbelt to help us live life to the fullest.

Some examples of Gates are Gate 54, The Gate of Ambition, which carries the theme of rising up; Gate 39, The Gate of Provocation, which carries the theme of ‘poking the bear’; and Gate 11, The Gate of Peace, which carries the theme of attaining serenity through the sharing of ideas.

We humans carry a mish-mash of Gates in our energetic bodies, and together, they create our wildly vibrant and varied energetic imprint, aka our personalities.

Our unique combination of Gates affect our behavior, the way we think and feel, our personality characteristics, how others see and experience us, and so much more.

Each Gate is one granular sliver of a zodiac sign. (54 is Capricorn, 39 is Cancer, 11 is Sagittarius).

So you can think of Gates as the minute variations that appear from one Scorpio to another, or one Libra to another, etc.

If you’ve ever wondered why two people with the same zodiac sign can be so different, you can now understand, by looking at the different Gates in their Human Design chart, which go deeper into explaining the energetic variations within their behaviors and personality traits.

Lines: Granular Shades of Each Gate

Furthermore, Lines show even more finely-tuned, striated, and granular features of each Gate.

There are six Lines total for each of the 64 Gates.

For the historians in the group, these six Lines originate from the hexagrams of the I’Ching, and the 64 Gates are derived from the “Keys” of the I’Ching.

The I’Ching is an ancient Chinese philosophy and divination tool that’s been used by both scientists and spiritualists for centuries. It contains fascinating lessons for humanity that are definitely worth exploring. In English, “I’ Ching” is translated as “The Book of Changes.”

Here’s a snapshot of the six Lines:

Line 1 is called The Investigator.

Line 2 is called The Hermit.

Line 3 is called The Martyr.

Line 4 is called The Opportunist

Line 5 is called The Heretic.

Line 6 is called The Role Model.

Where to Find Lines on Your Chart

To find out what Lines are illuminated in your chart, simply for the numbers after the decimal points in the boxes listed within the columns on either side of your chart.

Vast & Varied Traits & Characteristics

With each of the 64 Gates (e.g., Ambition, Provocation, Peace, and so on) showcasing one each of these six different frequencies at different times and through different planetary bodies, you can understand just how many different energetic personality variations we humans can potentially carry within ourselves, that we can experience from others, and that we might exchange in different ways, depending on whom we’re with.

The Role of Quantum Mechanics

Incidentally, when we “pick up on” and internalize the behaviors or frequencies from others, we’re basically experiencing the phenomenon of quantum mechanics. That’s just a fancy term for nothing more than the swapping of energy, or the shifting of vibrations, one proton or electron to another.

For instance, have you ever noticed how the energy in a room can completely change when someone new walks in?

That slight shift in the vibe you’re experiencing is quantum mechanics at work.

Someone who walks into a room is carrying all these Gates and Lines and Channels inside them. Meanwhile, so do you!

When that person enters our orbit, their energies begin engaging and interacting with ours. And so we “feel” something different, because the electromagnetic makeup of our energies converges literally creates something new.

It’s why we have “chemistry” with a partner, why we feel “sparks” as we’re falling in love, and why we feel outright repelled by certain others. Our energies either mix and create something delightful, or converge and create something dissonant.

Simply knowing this phenomenon is taking place, every moment of every day, helps enormously to understand the relationship between yourself and others. I also find it creates a huge space for understanding, tolerance and compassion in our relationships.

Not Your Grandmother’s Horoscope

When you’re looking at a Human Design chart, then, you’re looking at far more information than what’s contained in one generalized horoscope.

Among other things, your Human Design chart shows which unique combination of Gates you carry and which particular Lines they emanate.

Your chart also reveals which Gate and Line frequencies are available to you at all times, which ones are waiting to be ‘turned on’ when you’re in someone else’s presence (through quantum mechanics), and which ones are completely foreign to you, such that when you do get a taste for them (when planetary bodies line up and shift, or “Transit” in the sky in certain formations at different times of the year, which we’ll talk about next), you’ll feel these energies, although they’ll be unfamiliar, exciting, and potentially disorienting for you.

While it’s actually really simple – your chart simply shows you a roadmap of your life and powers – learning the language of Lines, Gates, Transits, plus what the shapes and frequencies all mean, can be complex stuff.

That’s why a Human Design reading by someone who’s spent years or at least months studying it is so helpful. What a reading provides you with is simply a translation so that you can make sense of it, intellectually at first, and then, through the sensations of your body, begin to feel all the powers inside you, which are accessible to you but which you may not have realized you’ve had all your life!

High Vibe, Low Vibe: The Choice is Yours

Keep in mind, each Gate and Line comes with challenges and superpowers. I call them High Vibe and Low Vibe expressions, and sometimes ‘Gems’ and ‘Challenges.’

It is up to us, individually, to choose whether we will learn how to wield each one for its best, highest good. We can choose to learn what the warning signs are that indicate for us when we’re operating with toxic behavior, from a place of victimhood, showing unhealthy boundaries, facilitating codependence or hating on ourselves.

Engaging in this practice and this study is how we learn to live the most fulfilling, peaceful, satisfying, joyful, aligned lives possible.

Why We All Get To Experience Every Energetic Frequency Available

From our vantage point here on Earth, each planet transits each of the 64 Gates over time, at different rates.

As they rotate and revolve out there in the cosmos, we earthlings “feel” different shades of each of these Gates at those different times throughout the year.

Depending on which planet you’re looking at, whether Mercury, the Sun, Jupiter or Pluto, each one spends a certain amount of time transiting each Gate.

For instance: Pluto spends decades moving through just one Gate. Jupiter spends three to four months in one Gate. The Sun spends roughly six days in each of the 64 Gates.

You can look back at your calendar and begin to understand why, two weeks ago, you may have felt more inspired than usual; why three weeks ago you felt more confused about life; why this week you feel uncharacteristically ambitious about your goals, and so on, when you begin to track the Sun’s transit’s through each of these frequencies.

The Sun was lurking in different Gates at these various times, giving us all a flavor for whichever theme was being transited.

I find this process thoroughly fascinating, and diving in deep to each frequency has been helping me immensely to overcome my own conditioning, notice where I’m being influenced, understand how to engage with each frequency in its highest vibration, and truly live life as my most peaceful, confident, ‘chilled-out’ and aligned Self.

If you’d like to do the same, I invite you to book a reading with me so you can begin to understand the Gates and Lines in your chart.

You can also subscribe to The Daily Vibe to follow along as I track the Sun’s transits and explain how each day’s frequency will be influencing us.

The Sun’s Transits Through Each Gate

As the Sun makes its way through the sky, from our vantage point on Earth, each Gate’s energy shines upon us, and each Gate acts as a prism through which the Sun shines.

That prism bends the light just so, somewhat differently day by day, influencing each of us collectively in different ways as time goes by.

Each day in that Gate or theme is represented by one of the six Lines.

Take Gate 54, Ambition, which the Sun happens to be transiting right now, as an example.

Within the theme of Gate 54, Ambition, we travel from the first day in Line 1, Influence, through to the second day where it casts a glow of Discretion (Line 2), then Covertness (Line 3), then Illumination (Line 4), on to Generosity (5) and, at last, Sincerity (6), on our sixth day in the energy of Ambition.

Hang around for updates that I’m about to publish that include a blog post for each of the Lines. I want you to be able to follow and along and study these in-depth descriptions of the frequency underlying each of the six Lines. Once you get the hang of this cyclical ‘program,’ you’ll be able to easily begin applying each Line to any of the Gates, and thus understand how each one shows up so differently, one from the next, one day after another.

Feel free to click on the links below to learn more about the Lines, anytime.

Note: Your “Profile,” or the way you live out your Energy Type (Manifestor, Generator, Projector, etc.), is a combination of two of the Lines. It’s derived from the Lines in the Gates of your Conscious Sun and your Unconscious Sun.

Line 1 – The Investigator

Line 2 – The Hermit

Line 3 – The Martyr

Line 4 – The Opportunist

Line 5 – The Heretic

Line 6 – The Role Model
