“I’m not good with words,” and More Negative Self-Talk to Detox from Your Throat Center

If you struggle to express yourself and long to get noticed, it’s time to reconnect with the magic of your Throat Center: where the energy for communication, expression and manifestation gets processed.

Today’s post walks you through the Throat Center in Human Design. In particular, we’re covering the conditioning that so often takes place in people who have Undefined or Open Throats.

I hope to offer you some clarity on why you may feel the way you do about yourself with respect to communication, and to help you reclaim the magic of your openness in this area of your energetic body.

Disempowering Self-Talk: A Sign of Conditioning

“I’m not good with words.”

“Don’t listen to me; I’m rambling!”

“I suck at communicating.”

“Nobody understands when I try to express myself.”

“I feel invisible.”

Welcome to the Throat Center! Our body’s ‘gear box’ for expression and communication.

In Human Design, we say that words are where manifestation takes place: not the kind of manifestation that’s trendy to talk about now, as in, “Check out these great shoes I manifested over the weekend!”

Instead, in HD, ‘manifesting’ is about taking mere thoughts and putting energy behind them via articulation, so that they become real.

Words give tangibility. Words energize musings into language. Words hold power. They put oomph & imagery & potential behind what was once just a thought bubble.

The Throat, then, is where all that deliciously quantum manifestation takes place.

The Throat Center: How it Works, Energetically

Pressure pushes down from the Head, into the Mind, and down into that ol’ gearbox.

And so the flow of protons and neutrinos goes.

The Throat is where we process the energy for things like:

  • coining a phrase,
  • penning prose,
  • communicating our needs & desires,
  • offloading our anger,
  • cracking a joke,
  • flirting with a hottie,
  • yelling out the car window at a terrible driver,
  • articulating our dreams into words,
  • speaking out against injustice,
  • contributing our two cents to a conversation so that we may be heard, understood and appreciated…

For those with an Open or Undefined Throat Center, all that can be wicked hard.

That’s because you don’t have consistent or reliable access to this energy for articulation. It comes and goes, depending on who else happens to be in your orbit from one moment to the next.

Conditioning of the Throat — and, thus, shame, self-doubt, insecurities and fear about how you express yourself — arises in lots of different ways.

And it can be difficult to peel off and detox from your soul.

BUT!

Remember that it IS detox-able, and it’s also hella liberating when you can begin to understand WHY you may have come to feel the way you do about your ability to communicate;

and it becomes empowering, rather than disempowering, when you can reconnect with your highest self to rediscover the magic of your openness in the Throat.

What Does Conditioning of the Open or Undefined Throat look like?

So, remember that time you were asked to share something about yourself at summer camp or on a job interview, and you had no freaking clue what to say or how to say it?

So you blushed, blurted something out that was garbled, and someone laughed at you or rolled their eyes? And from then on, you hesitated in fear anytime anyone put you on the spot to speak?

That was conditioning.

There was also that time when you felt the pressure to speak up during a work meeting, or while you were having a ‘difficult conversation with an ex, but you struggled to find the right words that might ‘sound smart’ or ‘offer comfort/conciliation’ in that moment.

Sooo they criticized you for seeming like you didn’t care enough about the situation, or that you didn’t understand them, or that you weren’t paying attention.

And so you developed a complex about yourself (“I suck at communicating,” e.g.)?

Conditioning.

How ’bout the time you noticed your in-laws furrowing their brows at you, because you were incessantly, frantically, filling the uncomfortable silence at that first, introductory dinner?

You couldn’t seem to stop yourself from spilling nonsensical chatter to release the awkwardness, but eventually, and probably way too late, realized everyone at the table was staring at you in baffled confusion like, “Who is this weird chick, and why won’t she shut up?”

Conditioning.

Here’s my last example:

That time when you longed to be recognized and noticed at work, because you knew you were smart and had great ideas, yet no one–not your boss, not your coworkers, not even your clients–ever seemed to acknowledge your existence or appreciate your contributions, so you got passed up for the promotion every time.

That feeling of being invisible left a bitter taste in your mouth, and a perception that you must not be valuable.

Yep, that’s conditioning, too.

SideNotes on the Defined Throat

If your Throat Center is Defined, you have likely undergone a whole different type of conditioning that would also benefit from doing some detox work — especially if you’re a Manifestor Type, who is here to initiate and whose Throat Center is motorized.

We Manis and Mani-Gens can tend to say things that often trigger others, and then we receive, ahem, some serious pushback in return. And oh, how that stings.

Here are a few things I can offer right now to help (’cause I been there!) until we get to a deeper dive into the Defined Throat on its own:

Inconsistent Yet Powerful Ability to Express

Any of the above experiences would, understandably, make a person develop a low-vibe view of themselves and frown on their ability to communicate.

But remember: if you’re Open or Undefined here, it doesn’t mean you can’t communicate well.

Instead, it just means you have inconsistent, fluctuating access to the energy for communicating.

It’ll be turned on by others in the room who DO have definition here; and they may energize your Throat immensely;

so much so, in fact, that you sometimes find yourself dropping powerful truth bombs and delivering quote-worthy wit-and-witticisms like nobody’s business!

Guys, Oprah has an Undefined Throat.

And Lucille Ball.

And Sarah McLaughlin.

And Taylor Swift!

These are just 4 examples of humans who are INCREDIBLY gifted with respect to their ability to communicate and express themselves!

So don’t, for one second, think that if you have an Open/Undefined Throat that you don’t have access to genius when it comes to expression.

Your special brand of magic, oh Undefined-or-Open-Throated one?

You legit read the room with your ability to absorb and amplify other peoples’ communication style,

which means you have the power to deliver the RIGHT messages to your particular audience, in the precise way they are most likely to receive, hear and internalize them, at the moment they need to hear them.

And, for that, you will, most definitely, be recognized, appreciated, heard & understood.

So? Trust in your openness!

Get comfortable in those awkward silences!

Release the *need* to get noticed, and surrender to the truth that you WILL get noticed and appreciated–when you let your highest self (or Source/the Divine) deliver the RIGHT words at the RIGHT time THROUGH your open vessel.
