Gate 24: The Gate of Return

Gate 24 in Human Design is the energy for reviewing information to find what was missed before and help the rest of us make sense of the past. Do you have this Gate in your chart?

“Run that by me again?”

Gate 24 is the energy for pausing and reviewing important details that help us make sense of the past.

It’s the furrowed brow; the skeptical voice that says, “Run that by me again,” having picked up on a ‘knowing’ that something here doesn’t entirely fit right, and that a careful re-calculation to decipher precisely what’s wrong is warranted.

24 needs to hear things more than once. It takes its time processing new ideas to make sense of them; a power that helps others move forward with trust that a thing has been vetted.

This Gate is associated with hearing, and is sensitive to beats and rhythms, good at screening out and sifting between discordant tones and resonant ones (literally & figuratively).

Music can soothe a busy Gate 24; intentional and focused listening does an even better job.

The esteemed Karen Curry of Quantum Human Design says Gate 24 ‘takes one step forward; two steps back,’ because of the way it reconsiders all the ideas constantly bombarding it.

In this way, 24 is ace at detecting what info is actually useful from what’s not. It ‘returns’ to proposed changes others have suggested to see if they’re worth incorporating before the group moves forward.

I put my Gate 24 to work just this morning by giving a final proofread to an article that a group of experts I’m working with have been putting together via Google docs.

With six contributors adding their own content over the past few weeks, the comments margin and suggested edits were a mess to sift and sort through.

I’d already done one pass to edit the first round, then volleyed it back to the gang for their response to my updates in V2. Now we just finished V3, in which I gave it my final Gate 24 review, and was able to pinpoint a few typos that needed to be fixed.

The Silent Mystic

In the highest expression, Gate 24 has a detective-like, forensic quality. It’s comfortable sitting in silence, either by itself or among others even as they happily carry on a conversation.

It can silence the chatter of its own busy Mind, too, despite a barrage of evaluative thoughts that endlessly come and go.

As it engages in its thoughtful review of things, 24 catches critical details that were missed the first time around. Even cooler, says my teacher and HDSchool’s founder, Katie Irvine, it has the grace to help us find the blessings we may have lost by forgetting our past.

An aligned 24 trusts that true knowing comes when it comes. It doesn’t fixate on the Mind having all the answers.

Instead, it allows manifestations to unfold in their right time, and shares its flashes of wisdom when the situation calls.

People with this Gate often report being awakened in the middle of the night with a sudden A-ha moment!

“You’re like a broken record!”

In the shadow state, 24 returns to the same issue over and over again like a broken record.

It gets stuck in the review of a thing, endlessly perseverating and causing others to say, “OMG, drop it already! Enough is enough!”

Out of alignment, 24 can rationalize away anything: a lover’s toxic behavior, a boss’s unfair treatment, a bill it should never have been charged. Nevertheless, it finds a reason to forgive and forget, or just pay if that’ll make things easier.

Which isn’t always a bad thing–until it is.

Gate 24 is my South Node, which is that thing we are continually faced with that can make us unstable up until about age 40.

As a 20-something, I was a ruminating, re-re-re-reviewing, anxious mess.

I waited tables at a popular Italian restaurant, and I often got so stuck “in the weeds” that I routinely screwed up people’s orders. I wouldn’t write down those tiny details that meant so much to people like, “No onions” or “dressing on the side” because I thought I’d remember them, but when it came time to deliver their food I’d totally forgotten.

I got so frantic realizing after-the-fact what people needed from me and that I’d forgotten (or really probably needed to hear twice) that I’d wind up having a meltdown and cry at their table.

This actually happened. I can recall at least one particularly busy Saturday night…

Everyone’s who’s ever served in a restaurant has had those godawful nightmares: you know the ones, where your section keeps expanding and all your tables keep getting ‘sat,’ and nobody’s been offered a drink yet and your tiny notebook has run out of paper and the chef is bellowing for a pickup from the passthrough window and the customers are complaining…

That’s what Gate 24 in the low vibe feels like! Nonstop, can’t let go of a thought, incessant review.

Thankfully I’ve gotten a lot more chill with that energy and, now that I’ve made it past 40, I understand what’s happening in my body with his energy so that it’s not such problem anymore.

But learning that I have had this energy defined, and that we ALL go through it when the Sun is making its way through it, has been a little tough for me to understand.

I didn’t immediately connect with Gate 24’s whole ‘silent mystic’ notion. Sure, I can go silent in a big group, which I always attributed to a fair dose of social anxiety.

But then I realized this energy is actually begging us to get silent with ourselves, first.

Our thoughts will never quit. That’s just part of being human. But being able to allow them in and out without judgment, without getting Velcroed to them, is the key.

I have some tips and tricks and meditations for doing that if you need some help and are looking for mentorship.

But the part of Gate 24 I did immediately see in myself? That bit about rationalizing away bad behavior.

Also in my 20’s I was locked into what I can only refer to now as The World’s Most Toxic Relationship Ever.

My boyfriend at the time started off all dreamy but over the course of our 5-year traumatic attachment, he started to steal from me, he regularly called me horrible names I won’t repeat here, he was violent and disrespectful. The whole ordeal was emotionally torturous and I had to do a ton of healing to recover.

Nevertheless, despite his warts, I found the good in him. I saw the wounded child he still was. I saw his tenderness and vulnerability. And so I leaned into my nurturing spirit to be the one to comfort him; in my own wounding, I longed to be the one who might finally heal him.

That was Mistake Numero Uno. (If you’re doing this, stop, please, for the love of God. It never works. He will only heal if he wants to heal himself. Come talk to me if you need help in this regard.)

Many of us grapple with Gate 24: we justify things and people, in our special ‘return’ kind of way of going back and finding something good in them, even while painting right overtop of the bad so we can’t see it anymore.

And yet, Gate 24 has given me some great survival stories to tell, now that I’ve learned its lessons!

This energy carries a real “I did it, I made it through, here’s how!” vibe that can help others move forward using the skills and tools that will actually work, because it’s seen and done so much unnecessary stupid shit that it can verify has decidedly not worked.

As if all this shadow weren’t tough enough on Gate 24, this energy can fear its own ignorance. Also a tough one for me.

It begs the teacher to never call on it during class because it worries it’ll never have the “right” answer. And it ruminates over whether or not it’ll be able to explain how it just knows something. Because this energy knows what it knows and it doesn’t always fully understand how it got there.

Dealing With The Busy Mind

Gate 24 also is known to have a tendency toward addiction. Now, I’m no doctor and I don’t claim to know the first thing about real addiction, which is an enormous challenge I know loads of people face — some very close to me, and I watch them struggle on the daily.

What I do know about is that, as humans, we can absolutely turn toward numbing behaviors when we just can’t deal.

Didn’t we all numb ourselves throughout the entire lockdown period of the pandemic?

We mind-numb with food, sugar, booze or sleeping pills when we can’t quiet the worry. We watch endless TV, scroll for hours, go shopping, play video games or gamble when our problems have become too ‘adulty’ to handle head-on.

We can avoid, or paint over, what’s right in front of us because it’s just too ugly to face sometimes.

Other times, it may just be so damn loud inside our heads that we can’t even hear ourselves think.

All this mental anguish that can begin with an innocent review of something can also burgeon into a skipping record.

This stems from mental decision-making, which we learned to rely on early in our lives but which is leading us off our path.

If you’re willing to step into your own Human Design experiment, you’ll learn that you’re not here to make decisions from the Mind. Your body came here with all the wisdom it would ever need to guide you to the next right thing, and the next.

And that wisdom tends to generally emerge somewhere from the neck down.

Which is why it’s so important to stop making decisions from the Mind, and to follow your Strategy & Authority instead.

If you need help doing that, book a reading with me.

The true power of Gate 24 is having the courage to just sit with the discomfort of streaming thoughts; to trust that the insights are coming; and to offer your clarity & wisdom when it comes, which will help the rest of us see what’s actually worth taking action on in our own lives.
