Gate 3: The Gate of Ordering

Gate 3 in Human Design is the energy for creating transformational change by putting order to chaos. Do you have this Gate in your chart?

Gate 3: The Gate of Ordering/Difficulty at the Beginning

Center: Sacral

Channel: 3-60 Channel of Mutation

Circuit: Individual-Knowing

Zodiac: Aries/Taurus

Biology: Ovaries & Testes

Difficulty At The Beginning

Gate 3, in the Sacral Center, is called the Gate of Ordering, because it can put things into a proper, healthy order so that necessary change & transformation can be made.

It is also known as “Difficulty at the Beginning,” because it can be either:

-desperate to make a change, often when change isn’t warranted yet, or

-it can be entirely change-resistant, refusing to dive into something new, even when action is imminently required.

As I’ve experienced it, my Gate 3 can become thoroughly, often rightfully, unsatisfied with current circumstances, whatever they may be.

It knows things could be so much better, sees all the problems and understands all the confines of its situation, so it yearns to arrive at some better place.

BUT, in the low vibe of this energy, it doesn’t know how to get there! It has zero patience, so it fumbles.

It can get stuck in the muck of Limitations (which, no coincidence, is the name of the Gate that it stretches out to connect to with, Gate 60, the Gate of Limitations, in the Root).

Gate 60 at the other end of its Channel says, “Hold your horses, 3! We can’t do it this way, it’s not time, it’ll never work, not like that, you’re forgetting that x, y, and z are over there blocking us!”

What does a low-vibe Gate 3 do? Plows forward anyway. Disregards Gate 60’s deep acceptance of the limitations at hand, within which the two must operate if they’re going to have peace & forward motion.

Gate 3 elbows its way to the front of the line no matter what, forcing the change it desperately seeks.

I did this when I moved to Seattle in 2005 to chase a guy and a new life. I forced it to happen, disregarding all red flags, and landed myself in a heap of financial, romantic, and career trouble that took months, actually years, and a ton of heartache, to climb out of.

Needless to say that was around the time of my Saturn Return, too. Which is a different ball of wax and a story for another day. Putting Chiron and Saturn together makes for a hard road no matter who you are.

Nope. Not Doin’ It!

Conversely, as mentioned above, the resistant-to-change side of Gate 3 digs in its heels. It refuses to move. It’s just not ready.

All it sees are limitations, and it can’t possibly fathom how it could move forward, leaving behind the safety & security of what it already knows.

It will choose stuckness and dissatisfaction over progress and transformation, because the idea of unfamiliarity, or anything “different,” is too terrifying to face.

Either way it shows up for us, if we’re leaning into our shadow selves, or our lower-vibe energetic expression of Gate 3, mistakes will be made. Accidents will happen. Things can spiral out of control by our own fumbling hands.

In my experience, either:

A) no progress gets made whatsoever and I miss out on great opportunities, or

B), if I’ve forced change too quickly, everything turned to chaos.

That’s because change can be hard on anyone. There may be a period of upheaval when, for example, a kid has to change schools. Or a grownup has to change jobs.

In order to cope with change, and to use Gate 3 in its high vibe, we have to learn how to make sense of ourselves inside new surroundings. We have to create a sense of order even when there’s a feeling of chaos. And that can be very unnerving.

Swept Up In Change

My mom must’ve seen me showing my Chiron-ic Gate 3 very early on. I would get so ruffled by a new environment, a new teacher, a change to my bus schedule, that I’d freak out and spiral in anxiety.

Mom started telling me, from a very young age, when I’d be agonizing over some upheaval, “Change is just hard for you, Janeen.”

And, after a while, she just kind of let me not ever have to experience it anymore. If some hiccup were forthcoming, she would shield me, as best she could, from ever having to endure that change, knowing how badly it would rock my boat.

But, over the years, learning from past mistakes, learning my design, and now knowing this issue is the thing my soul is yearning for me to figure out how to wield in its highest expression, I’ve been practicing patience with Change. Sitting with possibilities. Considering outcomes. Weighing options before plowing ahead to catalyze something.

Because the true power of Gate 3 is having the ability to be an Agent of Change; a Transformer of the Status-quo-that-must-go, a Master of Mutation!

It’s meant to show others what healthy change looks like. Even when it DOES rock our boats.

The high-vibe of Gate 3 tells us we really do have this innate ability to create order out of chaos.

To learn how to embrace that, we have tools at our disposal. Simply being aware this power exists and is accessible to us all, especially now as the Sun makes its way through this Gate, certainly helps.

But we can also access stuff like following our Strategy & Authority to make aligned decisions;

Breathwork to work through our impatience;

Calming visualizations of pleasant outcomes;

Meditation to silence the chatter;

Or by finding a comforting confidant who will ensure us they’ll stick by our side through the scary stuff, and root for us to step into the power of our true, catalyzing badassery!

Speaking of Root…

Gate 3 wants us to remember that we have the power, and the CHOICE, to sit our asses down and wait for right timing.

I know, that Sacral energy wants nothing more than to take action! But Gate 3 needs to wait for the pulse of the Root Center to be given the signal that it’s Go Time.

Until then, it’s just not time to act.

Maybe that’s what my younger self was trying to say when a change would upend me so badly. That my body just wasn’t ready. But that’s why being a kid is tough — because children don’t have control over their circumstances, usually.

As parents, we have to ask ourselves whether we’re forcing our kids into a change against the divine signals their bodies are sending them. And we have to be there to support their rocky boats when a change comes a-tippin’.

Even as adults, we aren’t always at the helm when a change is imminent.

So, if you feel like you’re being swept up in a change that’s happening TO you, or if you feel compelled to force a change, consider whether, instead, you can first:

-take a step back,

-evaluate your circumstances,

-create a little order out of the chaos you may feel you’re in,

-reclaim the sovereignty you have over yourself,

-see if something is or isn’t actually working in its current state, and

-ask yourself whether this change is really necessary right now?

-Or if there’s perhaps a better time to make it?

-What might happen if you waited?

-What could be some consequences if you plowed forward anyway?

-Can you trust that you’ll know when it’s really a good time to act? (Please say yes, or call me if you’re thinking ‘no’!!)

Listen to that Root, my friends, before letting the Sacral Gate 3 take action. Remember, the Root sings that song “Let’s roll.” Don’t go ‘til you hear it playing!
