Gate 17 in Human Design is here to share the possibilities and potentials for a better world by formulating opinions that lead us to expansion.

Gate No: 17 – The Gate of Opinion
Location: Mind (Ajna)
Connects to: Gate 62 via the Channel of Organization

“Wanna Know What I Think?”
Err-maybe? I dunno. Maybe. Maybe not.
If you have Gate 17, you are probably accustomed to the process of quickly and effortlessly formulating opinions about things.
That’s both a superpower AND somewhat of an Achilles Heel.
Let’s unpack this!
Gate 17 is the energy for recognizing the potential and possibilities in others, and for sharing that vision in order to be of service.
It’s not about blathering on about how your opinions are always right. Or offering your opinions, no matter how articulate and accurate, when they haven’t been asked for.
This energy is projected, meaning it functions best when it waits to be invited in.
Gate 17, located in the Mind, or ‘Ajna,’ is associated with the right eye, making it a very visual and logical energy in its capacity to see things clearly.
In the high vibration, Gate 17 is expert at taking answers derived in the Mind and crafting a new opinion from them; one that is sure to withstand the tests of both time and criticism.
It’s always searching for that one, reliable, trustworthy truth we can all believe in.
17 is driven to do this; it has to, in fact. In this way, it can be a launchpad for experimentation; creating an opening to see possibilities where none previously existed. It sees past limitations and inspires people to think big, unlocking massive amounts of potential.
It can help us tap into new patterns that work more efficiently and logically. And it can help us skip over the stuff that keeps tripping us up.
Opinions Aren’t Facts!

On the other side of the vibrational coin, a low-frequency Gate 17 tends to spout its opinions without thinking about how they might land first.
17 can burst a person’s bubble, or rain on their parade (whichever metaphor you prefer) with its harsh opinions.
Another person might refer to a deeply misaligned 17 as judgmental, a mansplainer or someone to avoid altogether.
This can make life really tough and very lonely for the person with 17 who’s just doing what they’re born to do.
Which is why learning about your natural energy flow, and how to get into alignment with it, is super valuable.
Anyone who’s identifying with the lower vibration, or “not-self” theme of any energy in their chart, has the capacity to make some simple shifts in their life to realign with the higher vibration and use it for the badassery it’s meant for!
Thing is, 17, doing what it was born to do when it fires off another perspective, sometimes tends to forget its opinions aren’t actually facts. But it nevertheless holds onto them as though they’re proven.
Uniquely Prone to Conditioning
All this probably comes as no surprise to those with Gate 17.
These are oftentimes people who’ve learned throughout their lifetimes that expressing opinions without waiting to be asked for them doesn’t really go well.
As such, people who have this energy are uniquely prone to developing conditioning:
- they may grow fearful of sharing their true perspective, no matter how valuable;
- they learn to ‘play small’ and hide who they are after years of being rejected after sharing their opinions;
- they probably put themselves under a ton of pressure to prove their perspective is valuable; and
- they may continuously feel underappreciated.
17’s may doubt their breadth of knowledge and worry they don’t have proof to back up their assertions if challenged.
So they can shut down and keep quiet, muzzling their innate drive to share the true potential they were born to visualize.
What a shame! We need you, 17’s, to guide us with your vision!
So…Let’s make a deal: you work on sharing your opinions supportively, in a way that we’ll actually want to receive them, and we’ll try our best to hear and listen from a place of groundedness and appreciation for your valuable clarity.
Sound good?!
The true gift of 17 is in being able to have fun playing with hypotheticals, engaging in potentials and possibilities, and inspiring others to expand their thinking beyond their usual, limited comfort zones.
When 17 uses its opinions to inspire and support, that’s when the magic happens!
