This multi-part series outlines my suggestions for why your child might behave as though they’ve been sneaking double espressos just in time for lights-out. You won’t hear these reasons from your pediatrician, but they might just spark an A-ha moment if you take a look at your kiddo’s Human Design chart!
In this post: Reason #1 that your kid gets hyper at bedtime, from my Human Design perspective, is that they may have a Defined Sacral. Learn more about this powerfully magnetic, internal response signal in our beloved Human Design Generator types and how having one could be affecting you or your kiddo(s) come bedtime.
Stay tuned for more reasons kids get the nighttime crazies in the next issue of this continuing series!
You’re exhausted. Frustrated. At the end of your rope. I see you, tired Mama.
All you want in this world is to settle in with your book at night and drift off to sleep in peace! But your kid won’t stop bouncing off the walls and it’s way past bedtime. Why?!
I know your frustration. I’ve been there. High-energy, night-owl kids don’t make evenings easy.
Yet Moms and Dads need their blessed rest, and they need to experience that calm sense of relief that comes after everyone’s finally nestled into their beds at night and all has grown quiet in the house.
If we don’t get that kind of peace from time to time, and we’re missing out on critical hours of deep sleep, personal relaxation time, and even time for catching up on work or chores. We can turn into banshees, or zombies, and we probably shouldn’t operate machinery under these conditions.
A kiddo who won’t settle in night after night can really throw a wrench in the family schedule. It’s draining–this struggle to tire a whipper-snapper out. Nightly battles can turn a peaceful home into a chaotic one.
If you’ve already discussed this issue with your child’s pediatrician, and their suggestions for what to do aren’t working, it may help to take a look inside their Human Design chart.
Look up your kiddo’s chart here to learn the foundational elements of how their energy was meant to flow to, through, and away from them.
What could be revealed about your child(ren)’s energetic traits may offer just the clarity and understanding you need to put a plan in place that will let everyone in the household get a good night’s rest.

Following What The Doctor Ordered
First things first.
If your child is having difficulty winding down at the end of the day and it’s becoming a repeated pattern, it’s essential to review the basics.
Heed the advice that your pediatrician, and maybe even a sleep specialist, will tell you, like they told my husband and me back when we were facing this very issue several years ago.
Some of the obvious, typical and extremely valid reasons your child might be hyper at bedtime are:
- lack of a regular bedtime routine
- screen time right before bed
- caffeine or sugar within 3-4 hours of bedtime
- they’re overtired, meaning they could still use a nap during the day but aren’t getting one, or they have had numerous nights of not-enough-sleep built up so that they are beyond exhausted
- the household is loud, disruptive, or busy at bedtime
- something is going on at school or at home that’s making them anxious or excited and unable to calm down.
If you haven’t addressed these possibilities yet, then definitely start here.
But You’ve Tried Everything
But, if you’ve already axed screens in the evening, your kiddo never touches desserts or sodas, there’s nothing going on at school, home or daycare to cause them anxiety, and they’re not over-tired from all of the above, but they’re still berserk every night, then unpacking their Human Design chart may offer you the missing clues you need to get them to calm down.
That’s because our Human Design shows us how our energy gets generated, how it is built to move through us, and how it is likely to be expelled from us. If your child is not ‘allowed’ to let their physical, emotional, or mental energy move the way that’s most natural for him or her throughout the day, they may have an abundance of power that still needs to be burned off, or at least channeled in some other way so that you all can rest easy.
Some of the common energetic traits that different people show in their Human Design charts are naturally–and cosmically–just more energized than others.
Your child may have more than a few of them.
Yet, with a few simple tweaks and a bit of understanding about where in the body these energies may be coming from, you’ll be on your way to peaceful evenings in no time!
Without further ado, below is Reason #1 for why (else) your child may be exhibiting “hyper” behavior at bedtime. Good luck and Godspeed!
Reason #1: Your Kiddo Has a Defined Sacral Center
Your energetic child may be a Human Design Generator or Manifesting Generator with a Defined Sacral Center, meaning:
They regenerate their own life-force energy when they’re doing something that brings them joy. If being around you or others in the home is pure fun for them, they may be soaking up the happy vibes and only thirsting for more.

To prevent perpetual playtime, move it — along with TV show time, snacks or goofing around — to earlier in the evening.
Instill a hard stopping point or curfew on fun to transition to a quiet bedtime routine.
Leave extra runway before lights-out for plenty of soothing, calming, & relaxing activities within an hour of bedtime, like reading, sipping chamomile tea, storytelling, sticker books, puzzles or a bath.
They have the innate ability to create lots of energy for doing, doing, and more doing.
You may want to ask yourself or their other caregivers/teachers whether they have they been given ample opportunity throughout the day to be physically active?
Are they “allowed” to move, jump, climb, dance, etc.? Some classrooms and households are extremely strict about what amount, and what kinds, of physical expression is “appropriate” for kids.
But Sacral kids are often movers, and they need to be supported in their need to do.

Build family dance parties or safe wrestling and horseplay into every evening’s routine, saving an hour of wind-down time after.
Leg wrestle. Have them hop on one foot or walk on their hands to the bedroom. Limit screen time to ensure they’re getting exercise and not having their natural melatonin production blocked.
Let them burn their energy off!
Magnetic, Irresistible Life Force (For Better or Worse)
Generator Types, who’ve been gifted with these magnetic Sacral Centers, are designed to draw into them all experiences, people & opportunities that will bring them more joy, more energy, and more life-force so they can (you guessed it) do more.
That Sacral, or magnetized battery pack, is constantly responding to whatever gets presented to it.
That means items or people in the environment that entice a child may inadvertently be causing arousal, when the child actually needs to wind down.
This can be distracting and stimulating if they’re responding when we want them to drift off to sleep.
Are there objects, toys, people or art pieces in the room that may be exciting your child?
Are you or others in the home continuing to gather ’round them at bedtime (we tend to do that to Generators!), causing more arousal when they need to be able to block out distractions so they can rest?
If so, remove any potential distractions.
Resist the urge to huddle or goof around in their room. Set an energetic boundary around their sleeping space so they know it’s for their peaceful rest time only. And do like my friend does: “bore” your kids to sleep!
But that’s not all!
